Melbourne
Food & Wine
Festival
Don’t miss the
show on Friday,
4 March, when
our chef Karen
Martini and host
Johanna Griggs
get into the
action of the 2011
Melbourne Food & Wine Festival.
Joh visits the historic Abbotsford
Convent Bakery, where she learns the
secrets of making artisan bread in a
wood-fired oven. Meanwhile, Karen
creates a delicious Indian-style chutney
called kasundi (see page 142 for the recipe)
and puts on a spread at the scenic gardens
of the Digger’s Club on the beautiful
Mornington Peninsula.
The festival runs from 4-14 March and
features more than 250 events right across
Victoria. One of the highlights is the
World’s Longest Lunch, when the Royal
Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens
will be transformed into a space worthy
of Paris in the Jazz Age. More than a
thousand revellers will enjoy a leisurely,
French-inspired three-course lunch
designed by Gabriel Gâté.
You can also enjoy wine tasting,
markets and MasterClasses, as well as free
food-themed films at Federation Square.
And there are loads of celebrity chefs on
hand, too, including Nigella Lawson,
George Calombaris, Maggie Beer
and Stephanie Alexander. For more
information on these great events, visit
